The World Tourism Organization issued yesterday the following statement regarding London`s terrorist attack: WTO understands today’s events in London not as an attack on the UK tourism industry, but as evil political acts against the UK, London, its residents and visitors. The WTO Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli sent a letter to Mr James Purnell, MP, Minister for Creative Industries and Tourism and to Mr Richard Coburn, warmly congratulating them for London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games, while stating that “it is with deep regret and anguish that we have just learned of the tragic events that happened this morning in London”.

Conveying our sympathy to the people concerned on this sad occasion and wishing a speedy recovery of the injured, the Secretary-General “assured that the experience gained by the WTO from the work it has accomplished in crisis management and the assistance provided to countries that have been victims of similar attacks, is at the immediate disposal of the British Government, even before (UK) membership (in the Organization) becomes effective”.

We remember how we felt on 11 March 2004, when similar happened in Madrid. Yet, Madrid finished the year with 11.2 per cent growth of international tourist arrivals and we are hopeful that the British and London tourism won’t be impacted.
