Tradition triumphs – WhichBudget announces Valentine survey results

It seems that when it comes to romance, the old favourites are still the best. Users of WhichBudget.com have voted Paris as the most romantic city in the world. The French ‘City of Love’ topped the poll with 35% of the overall votes. The Italian cities of Venice and Rome came second and third with 15% and 6% respectively.

However, Paris was the only French city to score in the poll. According to WhichBudget.com Italy is by far the most romantic destination with no less than six cities receiving votes: Rome, Venice, Florence, Verona, Naples and Siena. Spain came second with two cities voted for: Barcelona and Seville. Closer to home the Scottish cities of Edinburgh and Oxford, which is famed for its ‘dreaming spires’, came 7th and 8th in the Top 10 Most Romantic Cities.

Interestingly, Vilnius, the Capital of Lithuania, crept into the Top 10 with 2% of the votes. The enchanting cobbled streets, candlelit cafes and rich architecture offers love birds a perfect setting for a romantic break.

The top 10 most romantic cities according to WhichBudget.com were:

  1. Paris (35%
  2. Venice (15%)
  3. Rome (6%)
  4. Barcelona (4%)
  5. Prague (3%)
  6. Florence (3%)
  7. Oxford (2%)
  8. Edinburgh (2%)
  9. Vienna (2%)
  10. Vilnius (2%)

WhichBudget users were also asked how much they are planning to spend this year on spoiling their loved ones and it seems that the austerity cuts are beginning to bite. 76% of UK users will spend less than £50 on their other half this year compared to 61% around the world. Although, it seems not everyone has been hit as hard as a lucky few (10%) will be thoroughly spoilt by their loved ones spending over £200 on the special day.

The majority of UK users (55%) intend to spend the same as they did last year whilst 24% plan to cut back and spend less. 21% will be spending more this year than they did the previous year.

It seems that tradition doesn’t stop with the choice of destination either. At 31%, the majority of UK users polled said they plan to spend Valentine’s Day with a romantic meal for two. 21% said they will be whisking their partners off for a romantic weekend or night away. A bottle of bubbly (7%) and flowers (7%) were the next most popular choices. However, maybe the minefield of getting the right size, colour or style is just too much for some as just 3% of UK people polled will be treating their partner to sexy lingerie.
