A staggering 2 million people are expected to travel through BAA`s seven UK airports, over the festive period, Wednesday 22nd December to Tuesday 28th December.

The busiest day will be Tuesday 28th December when nearly 400,000 people will be travelling through BAA`s UK airports. Of these nearly 190,000 passengers will be travelling through Heathrow; 100,000 through Gatwick and 60,000 travelling through Stansted airports.

Tenerife, Geneva and Malaga are the top Christmas destinations favoured by Gatwick passengers. While Heathrow`s most popular routes are New York, Dublin and Paris. Stansted travellers favour Dublin, Rome and Prestwick in Scotland.

To ensure efficiency and service levels do not suffer during the holiday period, BAA is making a number of preparations. Over 400 IT travel systems will be tested, fleets of snow clearing equipment will be checked and prepared for use and the number of operational staff on duty will be increased.

BAA is also offering a new self service check in system for Heathrow terminal 3 passengers travelling with JAL, Air Canada and Gulf Air. The system is free of charge and available for all passengers regardless of ticket type. It is on trial until March 2005 when a permanent and larger scale deployment will become operational. The self service check-in aims to reduce congestion and passenger waiting times can be used across multiple airlines.
