United Airlines Files for Chapter 11 Restructuring

Lufthansa announced that Star Alliance Partner United Airlines has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. court system. This will allow United to intensify its efforts to restructure itself both financially and operationally, and ultimately seek to restore the company’s long-term financial health.

This move has no consequences for Lufthansa customers and their travel plans: All tickets will remain valid, and passengers can continue to accrue and redeem bonus miles and use the Red Carpet Clubs and First Class Lounges.

United will continue to operate normally during this time. As such, all Lufthansa code share flights remain unaffected. This applies similarly to all other flights which United operates together with its Star Alliance Partners.

All potential risks for Lufthansa have been evaluated and found to be small and manageable.

In the past we have seen a number of examples where airlines restructured themselves successfully under Chapter 11, said Juergen Weber, CEO of Lufthansa. I am convinced that our friends at United Airlines will succeed with their efforts as well. This is why we are currently investigating how we – in addition to commercial measures already initiated – can assist United Airlines financially without any risk to Lufthansa, Weber added.
