Flights delayed worldwide due to sudden Sabre system failure

The reservation system of Sabre is used by many carriers, went down at 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

A sudden technological collapse has caused concerns for the global travel industry as reservation system of Sabre, used by major airlines is down from Tuesday morning. Computer outage is being blamed for causing major delays at airports worldwide.

The reservation system of Sabre is used by many carriers, went down at 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Affected airlines include: Alaska Airlines, American, Cathay Pacific, Frontier, Jet Blue, LAN, Qantas, United, Virgin America and Virgin Australia.

Virgin Australia, which implemented the Sabre system earlier this year, told Computerworld Australia that it was manually checking in passengers for domestic and international flights. “As a result, the check-in process may take longer than usual and there may be some delays to flights,” the Virgin Australia spokeswoman said.

“Sabre customers were unable to connect to our system for a period of time this evening,” spokesperson Nancy St. Pierre said in a statement issued early Tuesday. ”We apologize and regret the inconvenience caused. “

“Thanks for your patience this evening,” the carrier said via Twitter. ”Systems back up, but delays remain from earlier outage. We’ll fully investigate this issue with vendor.”

The Sabre system is used by more than 300 airlines and more than 100 airports worldwide.
