Fraport Traffic Figures – May 2013: Intercontinental traffic continues to drive growth

Public holidays and Bridge Days lead to reductions in the flight schedule.

FRANKFURT, GERMANY – Fraport AG welcomed nearly 5.13 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base in May 2013. Never before in the month of May have so many passengers used Germany’s largest aviation hub. Increasing by 0.4 percent year-on-year, FRA’s passenger volume surpassed the previous record May of 2012. This growth is all the more gratifying because the airlines reduced their flight schedules, especially domestic and European traffic, to adjust for the unusual abundance of public holidays (May 1, 20 and 30) and bridge days in May 2013. Intercontinental traffic – advancing by 2.2 percent – continued to be FRA’s dominant growth driver.

Because of the public holiday effect, aircraft movements at FRA dropped by 2.6 percent to 41,930 takeoffs and landings, while cargo throughput declined slightly by 0.7 percent to 173,600 metric tons. Accumulated MTOWs (maximum takeoff weights) fell accordingly by 2.4 percent to nearly 2.5 million metric tons.

Fraport’s five majority-owned airports served a total of about 9.6 million passengers in May 2013, up 7.1 percent year-on-year. In particular, Lima (LIM) and Antalya (AYT) airports achieved double-digit passenger growth, contributing again to the Group’s overall traffic increase. LIM in the Peruvian capital welcomed about 1.25 million passengers, while AYT on the Turkish Riviera received some 3 million passengers. Together, the airports of Varna (VAR) and Burgas (BOJ) on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast recorded 183,000 passengers in May 2013.
