Istanbul announces tender for its third airport

As stated by Istanbul's Minister of Transport, this new airport aims to be the largest airport in the world, featuring a capacity of 150 passengers and reaching a massive investment of 8,7 billion dollars.

ISTANBUL – “Today the number of air passengers is more than four times İstanbul’s population. We cannot expand Atatürk airport, and must expand İstanbul’s airport capacity through a new airport, the world’s largest,” Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying.

Istanbul began a bidding on Thursday for the world largest airport, featuring a 150-million passenger capacity, thus hoping to make the city the greatest gateway for world air travel.

Initial estimations of the investment for this new airport were around 5,6 billion last year, rising to the massive 8,7 billion dollars recently. The ambitious plan is the investment to be completed in the next four years, challenging the Dubai airport, today’s largest airport in the world.

TAV Airports Holding, Turkey’s leading airport operator, Limak Holding, which manages Sabiha Gökçen airport, and Alarko Holding are the bidders who have expressed their interest for the project. Contractors are bidding on a 25-year build-and-operate contract for the airport. The deadline for submissions is April 5th, as mentioned by a Turkish official.
