The countdown to the inaugural Dubai International Maritime Awards has begun with only six weeks left for final submission of entries. Organised by Seatrade Middle East, the awards will reward top achievers who have worked to improve maritime standards within West and Central Asia. The deadline for entries is 30 September 2004.

“Local, regional and international entries are invited but the product or service must either have originated, or be shown to have directly benefited maritime activity, within West and Central Asia during 2003, “ said Chris Hayman, Managing Director, Seatrade.

“The long-standing Seatrade Awards scheme is already well known in the international maritime community for independence and fairness. The Dubai International Maritime Awards will likewise maintain these standards.”

Entry is free of charge and there is no restriction on the number of times a company can enter. Short-listed entrants will be invited to attend the presentation dinner at the Fairmont Dubai (6 December 2004) during Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2004, the region’s premier exhibition and conference for the maritime sector, which will run at the Dubai World Trade Centre from December 6-8.

This new annual awards scheme, which is principally sponsored by Gulf Energy Maritime PJSC, will cover the following categories: Safety and Quality in Shipping; Innovation in Shipping; Port Operations; Countering Marine and Atmospheric Pollution, and Education & Training. There will also be a nominated Dubai Cruise Award, sponsored by the Government of Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing. The awards also include a nominated Seatrade Personality of the Year for West and Central Asia.

The award for Safety and Quality in Shipping will honour significant technical or procedural improvements leading to reduction of risk to life at sea. The Innovation in Shipping award is for a project with significant potential to improve efficiency of any aspect of ship operations and/or cargo handling. The Port Operations category will recognise outstanding contribution to the development of the region’s port operations and the award for Countering Marine and Atmospheric Pollution is for new technology or technological improvements that can reduce or prevent pollution or assist clean-up. The category on Education and Training recognises exceptional initiatives designed to enhance standards in shipping through education and training in the region.

The nominated Dubai Cruise Award is for a company’s contribution to the expansion of cruise tourism in the Middle East, and the Seatrade Personality of the Year for West and Central Asia is for an individual’s outstanding personal achievement in any of the regional maritime industries.

The Awards will be judged by Rear Admiral Efthimios Mitropoulos, Secretary General, International Maritime Organization; Captain Duncan McKelvie, Chairman of the Nautical Institute UAE Branch; Captain Jitendra Misra, Chairman, Chartered Institute of Shipbrokers and Richard Wyborn, Chairman, Institute of Marine Engineers, Science & Technology.

The inaugural Dubai International Maritime Awards presentations will take place at a gala presentation dinner on 6 December 2004, the first day of the Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2004. Thereafter the awards presentations will be held annually.

The awards are supported by Dubai Maritime City; Dubai Ports Authority; and the Government of Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing. The scheme is also sponsored by ASP- Seascot Shipmanagement Limited; GAC; the Government of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing; and International Registries, Inc.

In keeping with the non-profit making motives of the Dubai International Maritime Awards scheme, a donation from the proceeds of the dinner will be made to The Mission to Seafarers.
