Plans and visuals have been unveiled for the first ever 18-hole championship golf course in Montenegro, on the breath-taking Bay of Kotor, by developer Boka Group. With the government’s focus on the development of elite tourism, the golf course will be a welcome addition to the sports facilities available to visitors on the Dalmatian Coast. The new course is being built with 100% British capital and with the advice of British consultants.
Located just south of Croatia, Montenegro has the fastest growing tourism economy in the world with more than double the world’s average growth rate at 9.4% per year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. The property market in Montenegro, still in its infancy, is also beginning to attract interest as it represents good value for money compared to its neighbours Italy and Croatia.

Boka Group Founder John Kennedy said: “Montenegro’s first ever golf course will enhance the development of tourism in the country. From a commercial point of view it will also strengthen the golden triangle of top end developments between Porto Montenegro, Kotor and Budva in a zone that contains some of Montenegro’s and the Adriatic’s most elite facilities. This premier region has been crying out for a golf course and adding this facility will significantly extend the tourist season in this part of the Adriatic.”
The 18-hole course will have a club house, golf academy, training facilities and driving range. However, one of the best features will be the dramatic mountain and sea views from every hole. Towards the west golfers will see the Lustica peninsula bordering Kotor Bay, towards the south east uninterrupted views of the Lovcen Mountains, and to the north stunning long views to the mountain range towards Orjen, Rubodo and Subra.
The parkland course will be developed following the vision of a classic British course but using locally native features and vernacular to fulfill that vision. The course will experience distinct changes throughout the year with fresh spring conditions, dry and sunny summers and leaf changing colours in autumn. The abundance of trees and vegetation will provide cooling shelter and shade in the summer.
Top British golf design company, golfmarnoch, has been appointed to design and construct the course. Previous projects have included courses such as Los Barrancos de La Zagaleta in Spain, one of the most prestigious private golfing residential estates in Europe and currently 27 hole Golfclub Heelsum being upgraded into what some are already calling a modern heathland classic. Golfmarnoch founder, Steve Marnoch, is a senior member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects who represent Europe’s most qualified golf course designers, and he will personally undertake all design work.
Steve Marnoch says: “The golf course will have some great natural features and is bordered by a native landscape of pines, oaks and cypress trees. The site has been cleared over the years for viticulture and whilst we would intend to retain a small reference to this former land use, it is our intention to reinstate the rich natural landscape and within that create a wonderful first golf course for Montenegro.”
UK-based Sales and Marketing Consultant, Russell Bragg, of Bragg & Co has been appointed to advise on the preparation of a new Master Plan. Russell Bragg has previously helped a number of high profile resorts launch new properties including Gleneagles, Celtic Manor, The Harleyford Estate, Langdale, Underscar and Aphrodite Hills.
