Poseidon Expeditions adds new, “Final Voyage” to the North Pole

The 14-day program, which begins August 10, 2015, was recently added to three earlier Poseidon-operated summer departures that commence July 8, 19 and 30. Per person rates start at US$25,995 for the final 2015 season departures.

MELVILLE, NY – Poseidon Expeditions announced the addition of a fourth and final exclusive voyage of the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 Years of Victory for the 2015 season.

The 14-day program, which begins August 10, 2015, was recently added to three earlier Poseidon-operated summer departures that commence July 8, 19 and 30. Per person rates start at US$25,995 for the final 2015 season departures.

Nikolay Saveliev, president of Poseidon Expeditions, noted that demand was high for the North Pole program next summer for several reasons. “It’s not everyday that you have the opportunity to travel to the top of the world aboard an icebreaker with two nuclear reactors generating 75,000 horsepower. This ship can safely pound through Arctic ice nearly ten feet thick. There is simply no other vessel on the globe offering such an experience to travelers.

“Second, owing to the practical needs of the cargo, mining and oil production sectors of the economy, 50 Years of Victory will retire from commercial tourism service following the August 10 departure. These industrial sectors will continue to grow along the Northeast Passage, and the icebreaker will be employed fulltime to keep the sea-lanes clear. So, this really is the last opportunity for those interested in traveling to the North Pole in this unique manner,” he added.

Saveliev said the company had worked closely in recent months with Atomflot, the icebreaker’s owner, to create one more voyage during the 2015 schedule before 50 Years of Victory leaves tourism service. “We understood the importance of meeting requests from our travel partners and their clients for the additional departure; we didn’t want to close the doors for good when there was a possibility of working with Atomflot to add another voyage. We’re very pleased this worked out favorably for all parties, particularly those requesting space next summer,” he said.

Since 2001, Poseidon Expeditions has operated 28 North Pole cruises aboard the nuclear icebreakers Yamal and 50 Years of Victory, carrying more than 2,650 passengers to 90? North.

Departures during the final 2015 season will feature an array of expedition guides, lecturers, helicopter flights, Zodiac cruises ashore and other special events and activities in keeping with their recognition as the final commercial passenger voyages of 50 Years of Victory for the foreseeable future. The program includes one-night pre- and post-cruise hotel accommodations in Helsinki, Finland, and transfers to/from the airport for the special charter flight to Murmansk, Russia to embark/disembark the vessel.

The 525-foot 50 Years of Victory carries 128 passengers in comfortable accommodations, all with exterior views. Public spaces include a dining room; aft salon for lectures, presentations and socializing; a bow-facing bar and lounge; library and lounge; plus a gym, two saunas and swimming pool with heated seawater. The ship has a clinic and physician.

With offices in the US, UK, Germany, Russia, China and Japan, Poseidon Expeditions is a leading provider of polar expeditions in the cruise industry. In addition to offering North Pole cruises aboard 50 Years of Victory, the company provides guests with the unique opportunity to travel to Antarctica aboard the 114-passenger luxury expedition vessel Sea Explorer during the upcoming 2014-15 Austral summer season. Starting in 2015, Poseidon Expeditions will operate the Sea Explorer’s sister ship, the Sea Spirit, to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. A variety of polar itineraries are available.
