RewardExpert ranks the most and least expensive airports in the U.S.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is the least expensive domestic airport.

Analyzes the 45 busiest domestic airports on a range of expenses a traveler may incur at the airport to determine which are most and least costly.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Travel can be inherently expensive, and having to fly through a particularly costly airport can put a damper on a vacation before it even starts. RewardExpert – a free online service that helps travelers take full advantage of travel reward programs – released its ranking of 2017’s Most and Least Expensive U.S. Airports. The ranking analyzes the 45 busiest domestic airports based on ten key indicators across four dimensions: transportation to and from the airport, plane ticket prices, amenities, and food.

“Airports are run like football stadiums; you pay more just by virtue of being there,” says RewardExpert CEO and co-founder Roman Shteyn. “Some airports take advantage of a captive audience to jack up expenses for items like food, parking, Wi-Fi, and other amenities. On top of that, some airports simply have higher costs for airfare, when compared to the national average. This ranking factors in all costs a traveler may incur at an airport to determine which are the most and least wallet-friendly.”

Key findings from 2017’s Most and Least Expensive U.S. Airports are:

Top five most expensive domestic airports
1. Newark Liberty International Airport
2. John F. Kennedy International Airport
3. Washington Dulles International Airport
4. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport
5. Los Angeles International Airport

Top five least expensive domestic airports
1. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
2. McCarran International Airport
3. Orlando International Airport
4. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
5. Tampa International Airport

To create the ranking, RewardExpert aggregated and analyzed data from the Department of Transportation, Yelp, local public transportation websites, local airport websites, SleepinginAirports.net, and iFly.com.
