The worst US airports and airlines for holiday travel, ranked in new Forbes Advisor study

Long Beach Airport (LGB) ranks as the best airport for holiday travel.

Six of the top 10 best airports for holiday travel are located in California, while six of the top 20 worst airports for holiday travel are in New York State.

With travel nearing pre-pandemic levels, Americans that will be visiting family or vacationing this holiday season face potential flight delays, cancellations and airfare prices that are up 40% from 2021.

Historically, some airports and airlines have had more issues like flight delays, cancellations and higher airfare around the holidays, providing a worse experience for consumers.

In a new study, Forbes Advisor analyzed data from the Bureau of Transportation to determine which airports and airlines are the worst (and best) for holiday travel. More specifically, we considered data from November through January for the 100 busiest airports and eight of the largest airlines.

Key Findings:

  • Westchester County Airport (HPN) topped the list of the worst airports for holiday travel, followed by Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS).
  • Long Beach Airport (LGB) ranks as the best airport for holiday travel, followed by Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA) and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC).
  • Six of the top 10 best airports for holiday travel are located in California, while six of the top 20 worst airports for holiday travel are in New York State.
  • Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport increases airfare the most ahead of the holiday season (with an average ticket price increase of $77.45), followed by Myrtle Beach International Airport ($70.27), and Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport ($43).
  • JetBlue ranked as the worst airline for holiday travel, while Alaska Airlines ranked as the best.
