Educational institute`s start program honored for excellence in career education

The Skills, Tasks, and Results Training (START) Program developed by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association

The Skills, Tasks, and Results Training (START) Program developed by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association has been selected for inclusion in What`s New Magazine`s Awards Portfolio 2004, in the area of Career Education. This awards competition recognizes outstanding instructional and consumer-oriented products and services of interest to high school educators in the fields of family and consumer science, vocational education, life skills, and guidance. What`s New is a bi-monthly publication that has served the needs of family and consumer science, health, and guidance educators for 67 years.

START is an introductory high school curriculum that provides students with the real-world knowledge and skills needed to begin a hospitality career. START provides training for positions in the rooms and food and beverage divisions of a lodging operation, including front desk, reservations, housekeeping, bell services, restaurant service, banquet set-up and service, and more. Guest service, professionalism, and career exploration are also included in the program`s course of study.

The START program can also be used as a workforce development curriculum, designed to serve clients such as at-risk youth, welfare-to-work, dislocated workers, and other targeted populations with barriers to employment. START graduates receive a Certificate of Completion after passing the final exam and after meeting the work requirements, become eligible for an industry recognized professional certification. In addition, they are prepared for employment in an entry-level hospitality position or for further education in EI`s upper-level high school curriculum, the Lodging Management Program (LMP).

As part of the What`s New Awards Portfolio 2004 competition, the START program was evaluated by educators around the country, who rated the program on a variety of criteria, including interest level, clarity of educational objectives, user friendliness, and overall strengths. The highest-rated products are considered the cream of the crop for high school family and consumer science educators. Award winners will be featured in the magazine`s May/June issue.

This is the third time that Educational Institute products have been honored by What`s New Magazine. The Lodging Management Program-Year 1 was included in the Awards Portfolio 2000 and the Lodging Management Program-Year 2 was included in the Awards Portfolio 2002.
