Wizz Air announces more routes from Budapest

Flights to brand new Dubai World Central Airport commence in October. Baku, Azerbaijan starts twice weekly service in June.

Budapest Airport is proud to be one of the first airports to welcome direct scheduled air services to the world’s newest international airport – Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport – when low cost carrier Wizz Air launches services to Dubai’s new airport on 28 October. Wizz Air is also introducing another new destination Baku in Azerbaijan, which will start a twice weekly service on 18 June.

Wizz Air will be one of the two first operators to fly to Dubai World Central with four times weekly flights from its home base of Budapest on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.  Dubai World Central was completed at the end of 2012 and its passenger terminal formally opens to scheduled traffic with the start of the winter schedule.

Jozsef Varadi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air said he was delighted to be bringing low cost air fares on the new Dubai route and launch new routes from as low as €74.49 (one way) fares, including taxes from Budapest. Competitive lead in fares on the Budapest to Baku route will start at €62/17990 HUF one way.

“We are very pleased to be the first European low fares airline operating at Dubai World Central and expect Wizz Air will carry at least 250,000 passengers on our UAE network in the first year of operations,” he said (Subject to regulatory approvals, Wizz Air will also add Dubai World Central flights to other central European airports of Kiev, Bucharest and Sofia).

Jost Lammers, Chief Executive Officer at Budapest Airport commented: “We are delighted to welcome two all new destinations to the expanding Budapest Airport route map. The hugely popular destination of Dubai and the brand new Dubai World Central Airport will undoubtedly be a big hit with our passengers. Equally, we are excited to be welcoming services to Baku, the capital and largest city in Azerbaijan. Rapidly growing Baku is an important scientific, industrial and tourist centre and we anticipate that it will prove to be an attractive and increasingly popular route for all travelers.”

“A new era in Dubai’s already proud aviation story is set to begin,” said Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, who also welcomes the announcement from Wizz Air. “The introduction of passenger services from Dubai World Central is the first step in the long term development of the airport and will provide an attractive alternative for air travellers. Upon opening, the new airport terminal will have the capacity to handle up to seven million passengers per year.  It will also offer full retail and food and beverage amenities.
