Norwegian Cruise Line implements quarantine measures due to stomach illness outbreak on Norwegian Dawn

Norwegian Dawn

The Norwegian Dawn had been scheduled to dock in Port Louis on Sunday, but since it had not gone to Reunion Island, it arrived in Port Louis a day earlier, the Mauritius Ports Authority said.

In a recent development, the Norwegian Cruise Line‘s cruiseship, Norwegian Dawn, is under quarantine off the coast of Mauritius following reports of a stomach illness affecting a number of passengers. The cruise, which embarked on a 12-day journey from Cape Town to Port Louis on February 13, 2024, has been met with heightened precautions to manage the health concern.

A spokesperson from Norwegian Cruise Line disclosed that a few guests displayed mild symptoms related to a stomach ailment during the voyage. Upon arrival at Port Louis, Mauritius, the ship’s management promptly engaged with local health authorities to verify the implementation of necessary health and safety measures. The spokesperson elaborated, “Upon the ship’s return to Port Louis, Mauritius, our team has worked closely with local officials to ensure the ongoing health and safety of all passengers and crew. This includes additional testing mandated by Mauritian authorities, which has subsequently delayed the disembarkation and the next scheduled embarkation by two days to February 27, 2024.”

Amidst concerns, there were unconfirmed reports suggesting the illness might be cholera, which led to an increased focus on the situation. The cruise line has intensified its sanitation protocols aboard the Norwegian Dawn, reinforcing its commitment to the health and safety of its guests and crew. “We have elevated our sanitation procedures aboard the ship as part of our routine measures to ensure a safe environment for all on board and will continue to take any necessary measures to protect our guests, crew, and destinations we visit,” the spokesperson stated.

In response to the delay, Norwegian Cruise Line is extending complimentary hotel accommodations to affected guests awaiting embarkation. The company is also facilitating travel arrangements for passengers currently on the quarantined ship, ensuring minimal disruption to their travel plans.
