Greek tourist destinations are not the most expensive holiday option for British travellers after all, an ACNielsen study has found. The survey<.>, which used the average cost of a Greek holiday as its point of reference, found that Zakynthos and Corfu were among the least costly Mediterranean destinations in 1999. Turkey, on average, was dearer than even Rhodes but not as high-priced as Crete or Cyprus, which, for Britons, was the costliest vacation choice after Florida.

As for summer 2000, Zakynthos and Corfu were seen as the most economical options while Crete is likely to fall in line with the Greek average. The rate for Rhodes is set to rise slightly, reaching that of Turkey which is predicted to increase, while Cyprus is expected to remain fixed in the position of second most expensive holiday choice.

It appears that, in order for Greece to take advantage of the opportunities being made available, it must give greater emphasis to sales in northern England, family offers, packages to encourage pre-sales bookings and boosting its share of the winter tourism market.
