A sharp rise in the number of Greek visitors to Cyprus<.> has earned Greece the title of second most important tourist market for the island republic after the UK. George Ioannidis, director of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation`s Greek branch, told a recent gathering of Greek travel agents in Cyprus that 20 percent more Greeks travelled to Cyprus in 1999, contributing to the total of 2,350,000 visitors who made the trip this year and raised the country`s foreign exchange earnings by 7%.

Ioannidis said that an even greater increase in Greek travellers is expected for 2000 in view of an attractive pricing policy decided upon by Cyprus Airways. The airline`s manager in Greece, Mr Yiannos Hadjimarkou, confirmed also that, starting next summer, Cyprus Airways intends to offer three daily flights, instead of one, using larger Airbus A310 aircraft, while their aim is to introduce a fourth flight.
