For 40 years, the Bremen 6 Days have been transforming the AWD Dome into a cauldron of first-rate indoor cycling in January. The prestigious sporting event regularly pulls in over 120,000 people and has as much to do with high-adrenalin endurance racing as it do with trackside entertainment and showbiz. Bags of fun and revelry never fail to rouse the crowd to their feet around the velodrome, while fun seekers can enjoy bumper-packed days and nights full of fairground attractions in over 30,000 sq m with dodgems, roundabouts, shooting galleries and many show booths. A party zone with adjoining cocktail lounge swells the dance floor with Latino, rumba and more.

Never say Northern Germany doesn’t know how to party. Each February since 1985, Germany’s biggest samba festival creates one of the great free shows on earth. Amid a kaleidoscope of colour and rhythms, an ever-growing number of samba groups, brass bands, percussionists and masquerades from around Germany and the neighbouring countries fill the streets of the entire city centre. After the dazzling mix of carnival extravaganza, partying and revelling usually spill over into local restaurants, bars and cultural centres.

During the summer, various open air festivals reign supreme. Whether it’s the Vegesack Harbour Festival, Breminale, Summer in Lesmona, Skater Night, Festival Maritim, Bremen Music Festival or Inflatable Island Regatta, locals choose to sit back and watch the show.

In autumn, the Freimarkt and the idea of letting the good times role are almost inseparable. The civic festival plunges the entire city centre into seventeen raving days of open-ended fun and excitement, thrilling the crowd into the early hours. Germany’s oldest and third largest folk festival regularly draws over four million people to the Bürgerweide, just minutes from the historic city centre. The fairground features over 320 attractions in some 100,000 sq m; no other German city boasts as many spins and rides.

The countdown to Christmas sees the historic city centre with Rathaus, cathedral, Liebfrauen Church and Schütting mansion taking on a new splendour with colourful stalls, fairy lights and the glow of many candles. It’s no wonder that amid enticing wafts of roasted almonds, cinnamon pastries and warming Glühwein the Bremen Christmas Market continues to be acclaimed as one of the most enchanting in the country.
