Greece sees the biggest relative increase in number of nights spent in tourism accommodations for 2013

The number of nights spent in tourism accommodations for 2013 in Greece, increased by 11,7% compared to 2012. This is the highest increase in EU 28 member-states and includes both nights spent either for business or for pleasure.

Thessaloniki – European Youth Capital 2014

Greek Presidency and Tourism Initiative
The Greek Presidency of the Commission of the European Union (Jan-Jun 2014) in terms of tourism, will mainly focus on the initiative of the European Commission to set up an EU Strategy on the “Challenges and Opportunities for Maritime and Coastal Tourism in the EU” with the aim to promote sustainable economic growth and enhance the overall competitiveness of the maritime and coastal tourism sector. The Greek Minister for Tourism, Mrs. Kefalogianni, spoke of the importance of marine and cruise tourism for the Greek and European economy and announced that the Tourism Ministry would hold a relevant conference on 10 and 11 March in Athens.

Ryanair announces new Athens and Thessaloniki bases

On the 14th of January Ryanair announced that as part of a $280m investment in Greece it would open its 2nd and 3rd Greek bases in Athens and Thessaloniki in April 2014 with a total of 9 new routes. Ryanair’s new Athens base will deliver 6 new routes to Chania, London, Milan, Paphos, Rhodes and Thessaloniki and will grow at Thessaloniki with new routes to Athens, Pisa and Warsaw.

Greece to enrich Tourism experience through Agricultural Products
Greek Tourism Ministry plans to work closer with the Ministry of Rural Development and Food to further develop the country’s tourism brand. The cooperation’s main target is to point out Greece’s unique products and gastronomy. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni who, among others, highlighted that the collaboration does not only involve the promotion of agro tourism, but also aims to showcase all Greek products that have received a European Union Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), such as feta, mastic, olive oil, krokos (saffron variety), honey and many more.

ABTA’s Travel Trends Report 2014 places Greece in one of the top 12 destinations to watch for 2014. According to their forecasting, the decrease in prices and the variety of luxury accommodation options are the key factors for attracting a new number of British visitors. The proposed areas to look for, among others, include the islands of Thassos and Ikaria in the North Aegean and the islands of Alonissos and Skopelos in the Sporades complex.

Five Greek hotels added on Conde Nast Traveller Gold List 2014
Five Greek hotels in Santorini, Crete, Mykonos and Athens were recently added into the Conde Nast Traveller Gold List 2014. Around 80.000 frequent readers of the magazine voted and highlighted the best hotels and resorts around Europe including the ones in Greece.

First international triathlon event in Peloponnese – September 2014 – Costa Navarino
The first international triathlon athletes meeting to be held in Peloponnese on Saturday 20th September 2014, under the auspices of the Peloponnese Region, in the beautiful territory of Pylos in Messinia. Participants’ accommodation, registration center, training and award ceremony will be hosted in “The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino” hotel complex.
