Solid airport traffic during August but oil price the decisive factor for winter. During August, passenger traffic across the European airport network grew by an average +5.1%. At EU airports, the average passenger traffic growth was +5.2%, while passenger traffic at Non-EU airports reported a +4.9% increase.
ΒRUSSELS – European airport trade body, ACI Europe released its traffic report for August 2015. The report is the only air transport report which includes all types of civil aviation passenger flights: network, low cost, charter and others.
During August, passenger traffic across the European airport network grew by an average +5.1%. At EU airports, the average passenger traffic growth was +5.2%, while passenger traffic at Non-EU airports reported a +4.9% increase.
Meanwhile, growth in freight traffic at Europe’s airports remained subdued at +0.9%. Finally, aircraft movements increased by +2.6%, reflecting cautious airline capacity growth in the market.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General ACI Europe commented “Summer is ending and we can look back at some very good months for passenger traffic at Europe’s airports – with the notable exception of Russia. EU airports have performed particularly well – with Athens, Budapest, Dublin, Madrid and London-Stansted airports leading growth amongst primary markets in August. Outside the EU, Reykjavik airport continued to expand at a record pace, along with Tbilisi and Chisinau airports – and followed by most airports in Turkey.”
He added “Within the context of still sluggish economic recovery in the Eurozone and risk of contagion from the slowdown in China and other emerging markets, oil prices are likely to remain the decisive factor for air traffic in the coming months. In limiting potential price hikes, the scale of global oil oversupply certainly gives us some comfort when looking at the months ahead.”
During August, airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year (Group 1), airports welcoming between 10 and 25 million passengers (Group 2), airports welcoming between 5 and 10 million passengers (Group 3) and airports welcoming less than 5 million passengers per year (Group 4) reported an average adjustment +4.3%, +6.7%, +5.0% and +4.7%.
The airports which reported the highest increases in passenger traffic during the month of August (compared with August 2014) are as follows:
- Group 1: Madrid (+14.0%), Istanbul IST (+11.6%), Rome FCO (+6.6%), Amsterdam (+5.7%), Copenhagen (+5.5%) and Munich (+5.5%)
- Group 2: Istanbul SAW (+21.8%), Athens (+19.3%), Ankara (+16.9%), Dublin (+15.6%) and Izmir (+12.8%)
- Group 3: Gothenburg (+16.0%), Budapest (+15.0%), Porto (+14.3%), Glasgow (+12.2%) and Stuttgart STR (+11.0%)
- Group 4: Bucharest BBU (+58.2%), Ohrid (+56.4%), Astrakhan (+44.8%), Timisoara (+33.3%) and Trabzon (+31.8%).
The ‘ACI Europe Airport Traffic Report – August 2015’ includes 217 airports in total representing more than 88% of European air passenger traffic.
