The upcoming 8th annual Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC) has moved up a day ahead of schedule, to be held May 10-12, 2004, at The Ritz Carlton Rose Hall, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, presented by the Caribbean Hotel Association, in conjunction with the Caribbean Tourism Organization, Burba Hotel Network, Jamaica Hotel & Tourism Association, the Jamaica Tourist Board, and the Jamaica Promotions Corporation.

The Hon. PJ Patterson, Prime Minister of Jamaica and Chairman of CARICOM, will open the proceedings as Keynote Speaker at the Opening on Monday, May 10th. There are many opportunities for us to collaborate as a region to showcase the Caribbean tourism product and deepen the integration movement. The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Investment Conference provides a forum for this and for attracting investments in tourism, where we can highlight the strengths of each country and the areas in which we complement each other, said Patterson. Within the context of the event, the Partnership Roles and Opportunities for Investors in Tourism (P.R.O.F.I.T.) project is another such opportunity, as we focus on identifying the synergies and so maximize the benefits to the region, he added.

This annual tripartite meeting between government, industry, and the investment sector has acquired a special significance, given the tourism industry`s pivotal role in ensuring that the region benefits from the rebound of the global economy anticipated for 2004. Tourism will continue to serve as the main business activity transmission mechanism from abroad, so that efforts to improve the attractiveness of Caribbean destinations, the perceived competitiveness of the region, and the quality of the tourism product, and to extend and strengthen the linkages between tourism and other sectors, will need to be intensified, said Alan Slusher, Director of Economics and Programming of the Caribbean Development Bank, in the regional press last week.

CHTIC has the specific objectives of improving the tourism investment and operating climate across the region; making the investment community aware of the development opportunities available in the Caribbean; and stimulating a continuing flow of both equity and loan capital into the region. The event has grown to become the most important annual event for those interested in investing in one of the world`s most beautiful and exciting regions, the Caribbean. It will again feature a host of renowned experts in the finance, development, and tourism fields; a dynamic agenda, illustrative case studies, and high delegate participation.
