A cruise was the top vacation choice for the perfect summer trip in a National Geographic Kids survey that polled 401 children ages eight to 14 – a point that illustrates the fast-growing trend of family cruising. The survey results come as no surprise to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), whose 19 member lines are carrying unprecedented numbers of children sailings with parents from year to year.

More than 1 million children under the age of 18 took cruises with their families in 2004 and there`s a reason why: Cruise vacations appeal to the whole family, said Terry L. Dale, president and CEO of CLIA, the cruise industry`s chief marketing organization.

CLIA is witnessing an acceleration of this trend in 2005 and beyond, and to keep up with demand for family travel cruise lines continue to add amenities and activities for the whole family – from toddlers to grandparents. Virtually all lines feature extensive, highly supervised children`s programs where kids are placed in age-appropriate groups. Teen lounges, video arcades, computer learning centers, toddlers` play areas as even special shore excursions for children are all a part of the mix.

In the National Geographic Kids survey, 35% of children said cruises were their most popular choice. Beaches came in second (17%), followed by amusement parks (17%), big cities (5%); lakes (3%); and summer camp (2%).
