A survey by ICAP said recently that some 22,667 new businesses were set up in the period 1995-99 in Greece with a total capital of 1.003 trillion drachmas. More precisely, approximately 5,068 new companies were created in 1999, with a total capital of 291.2 billion drachmas. Accounting for 36 and 37.7 percent of the total was new businesses in the commerce and other services sectors. This is followed by industrials 19.4 percent. Remarking about the tourism sector, the report showed that the average capital of industrial and tourist units was uniformly larger in the period under review than the total average. More precisely, the average capital of new industrial units was 8.4 percent higher than the total average, while the tourism average was 33.2 percent more.
