The WTO Business Council will present the results of its study on Forces and Factors Affecting Tourism during FITUR.

The study was initiated to carry out an analysis of the major effects of the Economic downturn, the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and other factors affecting the Tourism Sector in 2001.

The Spanish Tourism Secretariat and VISA (Spain) have each provided funding for this study on factors affecting the tourism industry from the point of view of the private sector members of WTO.

The combined effects of the worldwide economic downturn, whose beginnings date back to the latter part of 2000, and the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 have had far-reaching consequences in the world’s economy and international relations.

The tourism sector has been directly affected by these circumstances. The World Tourism Organization and its Business Council responded quickly and provided an international forum for debate, through the creation of ad hoc study committees, and as a research centre. Regular reports, of great usefulness to governments and enterprises, were produced.

With the experience and insights gained, the Business Council decided to undertake a study on Forces and Factors Affecting Tourism. The purpose of the study is to carry out an analysis of the major effects these events had on tourism development, as well as other factors -both positive and negative– at world, regional and national levels.

2000 questionnaires were send worldwide to ensure a comprehensive picture by region and by tourism subsector.
