Malaysia kicked off its 9th Discover Malaysia Tourism Fair 2004 in Singapore Friday with an assurance that it would continue to be a safe destination for foreign tourists.

Besides targeting Singapore tourists, the fair would also help to promote goodwill, better understanding and friendship between the peoples of both nations, said Deputy Tourism Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi when launching the fair.

More than 120 exhibitors are taking part in the fair.

The fair enables industry players from both nations to explore new business opportunities, expand existing ones, formulate joint packages and plan event-related activities.

Given our shared history and common cultural, social, economic and political roots, we must take advantage of this strong foundation to enhance our cooperation for our mutual benefits, he said.

He said Singapore contributed the largest number of tourists to Malaysia, making up more than 60 per cent of total tourist arrivals. Up to September this year, Malaysia received seven million tourists from the republic.

Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia was continuously charting new destinations and upgrading popular tourist spots to enable visitors to enjoy their holidays and pursue their leisure activities.

Emphasis was now being placed in developing eco-tourism, agro-tourism, education tourism, health tourism, sports tourism, entertainment tourism, adventure tourism, shopping and other sub-sectors.

The new campaigns aimed to develop niche market segments catering to young women executives, honeymooners, senior citizens, sports and extreme adventure enthusiasts and special interest groups.

To maintain its image as an exciting holiday getaway, Ahmad Zahid urged tourism industry players to constantly develop new packages, ensuring quality, sustainability and competitiveness in their products and services.
