How to prepare for a road trip

Good drivers are always prepared! Remember when going on a road trip to take important documents like driving licence, car insurance details and keep the number for breakdown services in your phone.

Now that summer is in our sights, we can think about long languorous days exploring with family and friends. And what better way to get out and about than hitting the open road? Whether you're planning a scenic tour of Germany taking in the fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein, or you’re thinking of recreating Jurassic Park with a road trip in Costa Rica, there are no shortage of awe inspiring road trips around the world for you to plan for.

But to make sure you make the most of your trip there are a few things you should prepare.

Book in for a service
If you're planning on a self-drive staycation then make sure you get your car booked in for a service before you head off. Checking everything from engine oil to lights, tyres and exhaust, to braking and steering. Servicing you car will give you that peace of mind before you depart – no matter how long your drive.

Plan your route
Sure a road trip is about the journey not the final destination, but it's still important that you plan your route – or at least have a rough idea of where you're going. If you're planning on a long drive, you'll want to check out accommodation along the way, and pre-booking might be required.

Take regular breaks
To ensure you're alert when on the road it's important you take a 15-minute break every two or three hours. Get out and walk around to stretch your legs and take a comfort break. If you've planned your route you should also plan scheduled breaks at fuel stations.

If you're driving through the night taking longer breaks and napping for around 20 minutes will help keep you alert. If you're a solo drive these breaks are even more important. Of course, if it's a long road trip, ideally you'll be sharing the drive.

Pack essentials
Good drivers are always prepared! Remember when going on a road trip to take important documents like driving licence, car insurance details and keep the number for breakdown services in your phone.

First-aid kits, high-vis jackets, and breakdown kits including warning triangles, jump cables, and trolley jacks are also essential. And don’t forget a bit of spare change for any toll roads and parking charges you might come across.

Accept you might get lost
Ultimately, accept you might get lost, you might get stuck in traffic, and you might get frustrated with your backseat drivers! But that's all part of the fun of a road trip!
