Yorkshire’s five most beautiful road trips

Getting between the delights on offer in England’s biggest county can be just as exhilarating with some of the country’s most scenic roads within Yorkshire.

They don’t call Yorkshire ‘God’s Country’ for nothing. With vibrant cities, stunning coastlines and spectacular countryside on offer, there really is something for everyone.

Getting between the delights on offer in England’s biggest county can be just as exhilarating with some of the country’s most scenic roads within Yorkshire. So make sure your car is healthy and reliable and hit the road. Here we pick out five of the best.

Keld to Langthwaite (13 miles)
Directions: Take the B6270 for half a mile before Stonesdale Lane arrives on your right. At the end of the road, turn right onto Long Causeway, which you can follow on to Langthwaite.

Long Causeway is one of the iconic roads to drive in Yorkshire, and also comes with its own slice of history. The Tan Hill Inn is the highest pub in Great Britain, at 1,732 feet (528m) above sea level, and certainly makes for a pitstop with a story to tell.

Stainforth to Malham (9 miles)
Directions: Heading north out of Stainforth, turn right after the used car garage onto Goat Lane, before reaching a roundabout and taking a right onto Cove Road and dropping down into Malham.

The shortest route on our list certainly does not lack for anything, with spectacular views of Malham Tarn. Parking up in Malham gives you plenty of walking options, with routes to three waterfalls – Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet’s Foss – all within easy distance on well-managed tracks.

Whitby to Hutton Le Hole (30 miles)
Directions: Leaving Whitby on the A171, turn left for Egton and Grosmont. Upon reaching Rosedale Abbey, follow a sign for Pickering before turning right at the Coach Horse Inn and continue to Hutton-Le-Hole.

Whitby is a world-renowned tourist spot. Tales of Dracula’s arrival on British shores and more regular seaside life will keep you entertained. A fabulous drive through moorland and quaint villages brings you to Hutton-Le-Hole, where sheep roam freely on the roads and eye up the picnics of those that have stopped!

Thwaite to Ingleton (24 miles)
Directions: Take Cliff Gate Road out of Thwaite and continue on before turning left onto Bellow Hill and immediately right. Pass through Hawes and follow the B625 to Ingleton.

The granddaddy of the all, Buttertubs Pass features on this iconic trip. The road gained fame when featuring on a stage of the Tour de France and remains popular with Lycra-clad two-wheelers today.

Stokesley to Helmsley (20 miles)
Directions: Driving east, take a right at the roundabout, before taking the B1257 at the next. Follow the road for 20 miles until you reach Helmsley.

This spectacular route encompasses some of the very best roads on offer in the North York Moors National Park, with attractions on the way including the chocolate-box village of Chop Gate (pronounced ‘Yat’) and Rievaulx Abbey, which has stood for almost 900 years. Bear in mind that this route is very popular with bikers.
