Eurostars Washington Irving opens its doors in Granada

The hotel division of Grupo Hotusa restores one of city’s historical hotels.

BARCELONA – Eurostars Hotel Company, the hotel division of Spanish tourism corporation Grupo Hotusa, has just reopened Eurostars Washington Irving 5*, a historical establishment in Granada that further extends the Eurostars Hotels chain of unique hotels. It is a 63-room hotel, based on and inspired by the works of the American romantic writer and his ties to the city, mainly through his ‘Tales of the Alhambra'. Eurostars Washington Irving 5* is the company's fourth hotel in Granada and its 20th in Andalusia.

President of Grupo Hotusa Amancio Lopez Seijas recognises that “It has been a long, costly process. However, since the hotel closed in 1999, our sole intention has been to make the hotel perfect for the city of Granada,” and he adds that “It's a very important project for our company and we are sure that it is destined to become an emblematic hotel for the city of Granada.”

Eurostars Washington Irving 5* stands out for its privileged location near the Alhambra and the elegance of its facilities, which include a magnificent library fully stocked with the author's works, including a display of first edition copies of 'Tales of the Alhambra'. Plus, its 63 rooms are decorated with sentences and passages from this emblematic work, creating a warm, welcoming setting where guests are enveloped in the romanticism of the 19th century. The hotel also features an outdoor terrace and pool.

Commitment to Granada
Recently, Grupo Hotusa purchased Eurostars Gran Via 5*, a boutique hotel with 39 rooms in a 19th century Renaissance-style building that is exceptionally located in the historical city centre of Granada. In addition to its modern, stylish rooms, the hotel also has a select restaurant, several events halls with space for up to 90 guests and a spa area.

Eurostars Hotel Company's future plans in Granada include opening a 4* hotel with 94 rooms inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca in the centre of the city, occupying most of the block delimited by Calle Carcel Baja, Calle San Jeronimo and Calle Cristo de San Agustin, with views of the Cathedral's Puerta del Perdon.

In addition to these four hotels in Granada, in Andalusia Eurostars Hotel Company also has five hotels in Seville, with the newly incorporated Eurostars Sevilla Boutique 5*; six hotels in Cordoba, the most emblematic of which is Eurostars Palace 5*; three hotels in Malaga, especially noteworthy among which is Eurostars Mijas 4*; one in Huelva (Eurostars Tartessos 4*) and another in Jerez de la Frontera (Exe Guadalete 4*).

History of the real Hotel Washington Irving
The Real Hotel Washington Irving was one of the most emblematic, modern and luxurious hotels in Granada and, in its time, the only one with hot and cold running water in every room, as advertised in that era. It was located in a building dating back to 1802 in an area known as “Las Ventillas”, featuring an abundance of taverns and inns. The hotel quickly became a benchmark for noteworthy visitors to the city, including the painter Mariano Fortuny in the late 19th century, although its golden age was in the 1960s and 70s with the boom of tourists interested in discovering the charms of the Alhambra.
