The Garment District is Manhattan’s most expensive neighborhood based on the cost of lodging there. That’s the finding of a new survey compiled by NewYorkHotels.org. Using the rate of the cheapest available double room during the period spanning June to August 2012 as its comparison basis, the survey stacked up hotels throughout the city against each other. NYC’s fashion center led the pack.
To stay in the Garment District, which is bounded by Fifth Avenue and Ninth Avenue, spanning from 34th to 42nd Street, in a minimum 3-star hotel, Big Apple visitors will have to pay at least $276 per night. Coming in a close second in terms of its overnight costs was the lower Manhattan neighborhood of SoHo at $270 per night. Rounding out the top three was the West Side’s Chelsea at an average overnight rate of $261. In contrast, the two least expensive districts, Midtown East and the Upper East Side, will cost visitors around $200 per night, on average, to stay in the area’s cheapest available 3-star hotel.
Those travelers who are content with a 2-star hotel will find the most affordable rates in New York City’s Murray Hill District. There, they will spend an average of $182 for the cheapest available double room. To score a cheaper room, they’ll have to be willing to venture outside of Manhattan. Two-star hotels in the vicinity of JFK Airport are offering rooms for around $120 per night, the survey found.
Following are Manhattan’s various districts ranked according to the average rate for their cheapest available double hotel room for the period of June through August 2012. For ranking purposes, only hotels scoring a 3-star rating or higher were included.
