The hotel industry secures the new Top-Level-Domain name ‘.hotel’

With the new generic TLDs there is a new era starting in the Internet.

BRUSSELS – As announced on the website of ICANN, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the company Hotel Top-Level-Domain S.a.r.l. prevailed in a difficult competition for the new Top-Level-Domain (TLD) ‘.hotel’. The company – being the only community applicant so far to have the support of a community acknowledged – enjoyed the support of the European and the international hotel industry rightly. “This decision means that in the future consumers, hoteliers and search engines can be reassured, that there will be a hotel behind a ‘.hotel’ TLD” explained Kent Nystrom, President of HOTREC.

With the new generic TLDs there is a new era starting in the Internet. Since end of 2013 numerous new TLDs have been finding their ways to the internet like ‘.brussels’, ‘.beer’ or ‘.vacations’. Until now around 300 new TLDs have started their operation already, but no community TLD, which are getting priority, if they can prove in a very complex process that they enjoy the broad support of the given community.

“Our partner, Hotel Top-Level-Domain S.a.r.l. managed to prove it successfully, thanks to the support of HOTREC and many of its member associations as well as numerous other hotel associations around the world” explained Christian de Barrin, CEO of HOTREC. “The European hotel community is very much relieved by this decision, as in the first round of the Community Priority Evaluation (CPE) none of the community applicants could prevail” added Kent Nystrom.

For the TLD ‘.hotel’ seven different applications were in competition, where only Hotel Top-Level-Domain S.a.r.l. enjoyed the support of the hotel industry and managed to file a community application with ICANN. This application is designed to allow only hotels, hotel chains, hotel associations and hotel marketing organisations to register domain names ending on the TLD ‘.hotel’. This and the support of HOTREC and other associations have apparently convinced ICANN, which awarded 15 out of 16 points in the CPE to the application, where 14 points would have been sufficient already.
