New Mexico Tourism Department Secretary Michael Cerletti has joined travel industry professionals from around New Mexico and across the country at the 2006 Travel Leadership Summit, a highly-focused, high-profile event in Washington, D.C. that facilitates contact between travel industry leaders and each state’s Congressional delegation.
“The objective of the Summit (organized by the Tourism Industry Association of America – TIA) is to build an identity and unified voice for the travel industry,” Secretary Cerletti said, “and to raise awareness of the economic, social and cultural impact of tourism with the Administration, Congress, state and local government and the media.”
The New Mexico delegation, which includes Tourism Department Deputy Secretary Sharon Maloof and members of the New Mexico Tourism Commission (Christopher Stagg – chairman, Al Lucero, Randy Randall, Selina Chino and Julian Garza), will host a New Mexico Travel and Tourism Industry Dinner at Galileo Restaurant in Washington. All five members of the New Mexico delegation (Sens. Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman and Reps. Heather Wilson, Steve Pearce and Tom Udall) are expected to attend).
“International travelers spent more than $90 billion in the United States in 2004, yet our national budget is abysmal when compared to most other major nations, and we are the only one without a national tourism office,” Secretary Cerletti said. “TIA’s purpose in sponsoring this annual summit and our purpose in being here is to make sure government officials are aware of how critically important the tourism industry is in today’s national economy.”
