MIA welcomes Italian airline Meridiana this summer

Four weekly nonstop flights from Milan to begin on June 8.

MIAMI – Italian airline Meridiana has announced that it will begin serving Miami International Airport with four weekly flights from Milan starting June 8, utilizing recently refurbished 247-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Miami will join New York as the carrier’s two U.S. destinations.

“We appreciate Meridiana for choosing MIA to be part of its expansion into new markets this year,” said MDAD Chief of Staff Joseph Napoli. “We gladly welcome their additional service to the popular city of Milan, as well as their connections to new destinations around the world.”

After its summer 2018 expansion, Meridiana’s network from Milan will include 17 destinations in Italy, Africa, Russia, China, the U.S. and the Caribbean. The airline will increase MIA’s current service options to Italy, which include nonstop flights to Milan by American Airlines and Rome service by Alitalia. MIA serves more than 288,000 passengers annually to and from Italy.

Meridiana Executive Deputy Chairman, Mr. Marco Rigotti, said: “Meridiana continues to expedite its expansion plans, and starting this new Miami-Milan will provide our passengers with an array of convenient travel options when travelling to Milan and Italy. In connection with the Miami-Milan routes, our customers will also reach several of the top Italian destinations in Sicily, Naples with Sorrento, Capri and Positano, Rome and Sardinia Emerald Coast.”

Meridiana is the second airline to announce a launch at MIA this year. Brazilian low-cost carrier GOL has scheduled a return to MIA on November 18 with daily flights to Brasilia and Fortaleza. In 2017, MIA welcomed seven new passenger airlines and four all-cargo airlines, bringing its total number of carriers to 107 – the most at any U.S. airport.
