The number of passengers was up 5.7% on the same month last year and was driven by rises in both domestic and international passengers.
A total of 1,206,540 passengers passed through Edinburgh Airport last month, making it the busiest April on record at Scotland’s busiest airport.

Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, Gordon Dewar, said: “It’s great to see growth in both our domestic and international markets, especially after a flat month in March due to the Beast from the East, and this has resulted in our busiest April ever.
“We’re flying to more destinations than ever before with 22 new routes launching since this time last year, 21 of those to international destinations which is expanding our reach and opening Scotland to even more of the world.
“We’ve recently announced two fantastic additions in Beijing with Hainan and Dubai with Emirates and they will attract even more tourists and expand business opportunities, as will our direct flight to Washington with United which comes online later this month– these are all immensely exciting for the capital and Scotland.”
Background
Domestic market grew by 3.1% due to the following reasons:
- easyJet used larger aircraft to London and Domestic routes compared to 2017.
- easyJet launched a new service to Jersey on 31st March 2018.
- Recommencement of Ryanair service to Stansted
International market recorded a 7.2% YoY growth due to 21 new routes launched since last April:
- Ryanair operated 15 routes this April that weren’t operated this time last year. The routes launched since April 2017 are: Budapest, Carcassonne, Corfu, Eindhoven, Baden-Baden (Karlsruhe), Hamburg, Katowice, Nantes, Prague, Berlin Schoenefeld, Szczecin, Toulouse, Tenerife, Valencia and Wroclaw.
- easyJet used bigger aircraft for many international markets and also launched 2 new routes: Sofia from Dec 2017 & Seville from Mar 2018.
- Norwegian introduced new long-haul routes to Providence & Stewart in June 2017.
- Jet2 destinations were more popular and more flights operated between Edinburgh and Funchal, Paphos, Dubrovnik & Naples.
- Brussels Airlines use larger aircraft since November 2017
- Popular destinations in April were: Tenerife with Jet2 and Ryanair; Athens, Lisbon and Paphos (Cyprus) with easyJet.
Compared to April 2017 we served 22 new routes in April 2018:
- 20 new international routes
- 1 new domestic route (easyJet to Jersey)
- 1 season extension (Ryanair to Corfu – previously starting in May)
In April 2018 one new route was launched: Jet2 to Antalya. This is a twice a week service.
