The Thai tourist authorities are about to unveil their plans for the next four years. The master plan aims to turn Thailand into a complete hub for Asian tourism, capable of drawing visitors from the world`s 50 main markets.

The tourist industry hopes to attract at least 20 million visitors a year by 2008, said the Secretary to Tourism and Sports Minister, Warawut Silapa-archa.

As part of the plan, the national air carrier Thai Airways International (THAI) intends to expand its networks in Asia and Europe, according to the President of THAI, Kanok Abhiradi.

The 20-million target is double the current level of visitors, according to Vijit Na Ranong, President of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)`s tourism sector. In the first five months of this year, tourist arrivals increased by 22 percent, compared to the same period last year.

Most of this increase came from Southeast Asian and Indochinese countries.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports will unveil its four-year master plan – strategies for 2004-2008 — on 2 July at the Thailand International Tourism Conference to be held at the Sofitel Central Hotel here. (TNA)-E008
