EIBTM delegates to get a taste of Australia

BARCELONA – ΕΙΒΤΜ – REPORT: Tourism Australia will be inviting delegates to share a taste of Australia at their EIBTM stand on Tuesday 30 November and Wednesday 1 December.

“The hospitality on the stand will celebrate the end of a year of solid performance for Australia’s business events industry,” said Lene Corgan, Business Events Manager for Tourism Australia, UK and Europe.

From the UK, there has been a 14 per cent increase in convention and conference arrivals (year ending September 2011) and an eight per cent increase in total business arrivals during the same period.  From Europe, Germany remains in Australia’s top 15 source markets with an increase of three per cent in business arrivals (year ending September 2011).

In 2011, the Australian industry has seen the announcement and completion of several large scale investments to business event infrastructure.

In Sydney alone, more than AUD$7 billion is being invested in infrastructure including an expansion to the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, a major upgrade of The Star Casino and the harbour-side development Barangaroo. In Queensland, an AUD$40 million expansion of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre is underway. Melbourne’s six green star-rated Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre is also expanding its award winning exhibition facilities this year and the Adelaide Convention Centre has announced an AU$350 million expansion project.

It’s not just the major cities upgrading their facilities – in the heart of the country, the Ayers Rock Resort conference and hotel facilities are being expanded and refurbished to increase capacity, quality and generate indigenous career opportunities.

“Australia’s commitment to the industry is not only evident in high levels of investment but Tourism Australia’s ongoing international marketing efforts,” Ms Corgan said

“Earlier this month nine UK and European buyers took part in Dreamtime 2011, Tourism Australia’s signature event for Business Event planners showcasing Australia as a world class incentive travel destination .

“The buyers were joined by 63 international delegates who each discovered Australia first-hand through a series of educational visits before coming together in Sydney for networking and educational events,” she said.

In 2012, Tourism Australia will continue to facilitate business between Australian suppliers and European trade. A new website will act as an informative tool for agents and buyers whilst trade events will continue to facilitate relationships and business.
