ITB 2003 – German leisure carrier Air Berlin, which gave a press conference at ITB, says it plans to expand both low-cost and charter flights this year by adding 13 more aircraft to its fleet. The privately owned carrier will take delivery of eight more 184-seat B737-800s and has leased three 90-100 seat BAE146 and two 148-seat B737-700s. From 5 April it will expand its daily Mallorca Shuttle flights to Stuttgart and offer connecting flights via Palma to Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga from six German airports.

Its no-frills City Shuttle direct flights to European city destinations will be expanded with new services from Monchengladbach from Bergamo, London, Zurich and Vienna as well as Hamburg-Vienna and Karlsruhe-London.

Owner Joachim Hunold said he aimed to increase turnover 30 per cent in 2003 to some EUR900 million. Since launching the no-frills City Shuttle flights last September, load factors and yields had been better than expected, he stressed.
