airberlin will fly to Kaliningrad three times per week, thus establishing the only nonstop connection from Berlin and Germany to the Russian exclave and centre of culture and commerce on the Baltic.
At the opening ceremony at Berlin-Tegel this morning, airberlin CEO Hartmut Mehdorn said: "The economic relations between Germany and Russia continue to grow and this means an increased demand for air travel, especially in the market sector of business travel." He added: "No other airline connects these two cities nonstop from Germany. Our new route between Berlin and Kaliningrad fills this gap in the European route network."
Dr. Till Bunse, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Berlin Brandenburg Airport GmbH added: "We are pleased that airberlin will fly nonstop from Berlin to Kaliningrad. For business travellers, the new route is an especially important addition to our Eastern European offerings. Furthermore, travellers from Russia can transfer in Berlin and continue on airberlin flights in all directions."
Andrey V. Zverev, Ambassador and Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in the Federal Republic of Germany, expressed the following at the festive opening ceremony: "The opening of a new route between Berlin and Kaliningrad affirms the expansion of political, economic, scientific and cultural relations between our countries. As an airline, airberlin has already proven itself to be a reliable partner with high service quality. Therefore, we welcome this new route.”
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday – and also on Saturday starting 15th September – airberlin passengers can fly nonstop to the Russian exclave between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast. Via the Berlin hub, connections are available from and to Dusseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich as well as to Vienna, Milan, Paris or Scandinavia. Flights via the airberlin hub Palma de Mallorca are also possible, thus connecting many departure airports in Spain to Kaliningrad.
