Copenhagen, Boston, Dubai and San Juan feature on a newly unveiled list of the world`s top ten up-and-coming congress cities – the `meeting Meccas` of the future – while at the same time Copenhagen, Melbourne and Vancouver also find a place on the list of the best cities in the world to call home.

According to Successful Meetings Magazine, which features in-depth coverage and analysis of the key issues affecting the meetings industry, the next meeting Meccas will be BestCities members Boston, Dubai and Copenhagen. San Juan, which will join BestCities.net in 2005, is also named as an up-coming congress destination.

In selecting their top ten up-coming destinations Successful Meetings emphasised that there had been an increased number of direct flights to the destinations, an improving hotel inventory and that there were convention centres being built or planned. Other decisive factors included a range of organisations like conventions and visitors bureaus and meeting planner associations in the offing.

Copenhagen in the front row

Copenhagen`s position on Successful Meeting Magazine`s list underlines the Danish capital`s position as one of the world`s most appealing international congress cities. Copenhagen has been ranked among the Union of International Association`s (UIA) top ten most used congress cities for many years. Its high standard of service and general efficiency, its low crime rate, and its cultural and entertainment attractions make it an ideal congress destination. Add to that the short distances between hotels and conference facilities and the number of direct flights to Copenhagen Airport from 120 destinations worldwide, and Copenhagen becomes an obvious choice for any congress planner.

As well as being a popular congress city, Copenhagen also features on a list ranking the world`s top cities from the perspective of expatriate residents. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) assessed the level of hardship for expatriates in 130 cities. The cities were rated from `one` to `five` in 12 categories including housing, education, recreational activities, health, climate and the risk of terrorism. Based on these criteria Copenhagen was ranked the sixth best city to call home. Melbourne and Vancouver, also members of Best.Cities.net, topped the list at numbers one and two respectively. A unique alliance BestCities.net. is a unique global convention bureau alliance that was

formed in 2000. The alliance consists of seven partners on five continents: Boston, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dubai, Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Vancouver. San Juan will join the alliance in 2005, while BestCities.net is also currently seeking a partnership with an Asian city.
