The Chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Authority, Ahmed El Khadem, and the Tourism Advisor for Egypt in Spain, Magued Abousedera, presented the tourism results that the country achieved during the year 2006 at FITUR. In short, the country witnessed a record number of 9 million foreign tourist arrivals, a 5.5% increase compared to the year 2005.

The largest numbers of tourists who travelled to Egypt came from Europe and the Middle East. In this respect, the most important tourist-producing markets included the United Kingdom, which sent more than 1 million tourists, and Russia and Germany, countries that also sent around one million tourists each.

The number of Spaniards who visited Egypt also increased, especially over the last few months of last year, as witnessed by the results corresponding to October, when the number of Spanish tourists increased by 44% compared to the previous year. November witnessed a 22% increase and December an increase of more than 18%.

Throughout the presentation, Ahmed El Khadem stated that Egypt has always been a focal point for tourism, increasing its number of visitors each year. In this respect, I am delighted to see that people from all over the world come to Egypt in order to discover the marvellous treasures that can be found in our country. Furthermore, tourists tend to repeat the experience, not only in order to visit Egypt`s impressive sights, but also to enjoy its beautiful beaches and its hotel complexes situated all along the coasts, destinations that enjoy sun and good temperatures all year round.

Egypt predicts that the number of foreign tourist arrivals in the country will increase to 16 million by the year 2014. With this goal in mind, the Ministry for Tourism plans to open a number of new tourist destinations, as well as promoting the development of new segments, improving facilities and services within the industry and encouraging new investment.
