ExCeL London announced it has won the bid to host the largest medical meeting ever to come to the capital. Gastro London 2009 is expected to attract 12,000 – 15,000 delegates from around the globe during a  five-day event which is projected to generate over £17m for the London economy in delegate spend alone.

World Gastroenterology Organisation – Organisation Mondiale de Gastro-Enterologie (WGO- OMGE) and United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF) have joined forces for the first time ever, choosing London over several other world capitals for this monumental event. Professor Eamonn Quigley, president of WGO-OMGE explains: “We were attracted to London because it is one of the world’s leading capitals with ready access from every part of the globe, a reputation as a safe and visitor-friendly city and a city where the options for social activities are endless.”

Experts and practitioners in the field of gastroenterology including doctors, surgeons, professors and nurses are expected to attend Gastro London 2009.

Vanessa Cotton, managing director of ExCeL London’s conference and events division remarks: “We have worked tirelessly with the organiser over the past year to provide a solution that matches the scale and complexity of this event. London is widely and deservedly recognised and favoured as a business destination and even more so now with the existence of a venue easily able to accommodate events of this size. It is only fitting that we are increasingly beginning to win events of this stature, particularly in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games.”

Chief executive of Visit London James Bidwell says: “This win proves London is the destination for association events. London once again leads the way in winning new global business with its offering of world class venues and wealth of experienced and creative talent to back them.”
