Frankfurt Airport has grown far beyond its original infrastructure function to become a vibrant airport city in itself. This worldwide trend is the theme of the two-day “Airport Cities – International Gateways to Regional Economic Development” conference to be held at Frankfurt Airport from April 25 to 26.

Fraport AG, the owner and manager of Frankfurt Airport City, is hosting this event, which is being organized by Insight Media Ltd.

Airport cities like FRA have long been serving as the economic engine of their regions. The arrival and departure of people and goods is only one aspect of the Frankfurt Airport City. Other features include shopping, gastronomy, hotels, and offices. Major airports are increasingly developing into independent city centers with commercial parks, conference facilities, as well as educational and cultural offerings for mobile customers.

Airports have also become particularly attractive to the advertising industry as venues for promoting major brands. Optimum links to ground transportation networks – particularly road and rail – are prerequisites for airport cities. Like FRA’s successful CargoCity South development area, suitable commercial sites for logistics companies and other service providers are also essential for developing an airport city./

Fraport AG’s executive board chairman Dr. Wilhelm Bender will open the Airport Cities conference and exhibition, which will be moderated by Prof. John D. Kasarda of the University of North Carolina. Other keynote speakers will include chief executive officers of airports from around the globe:

Jeffrey Fegan of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Li Peiying of Beijing Capital Airport Group Corporation, Gerlach J. Cerfontaine of Schiphol Group, Larry Berg of Vancouver International Airport, and Jaehee Lee of Incheon International Airport.
