Greece`s Macedonian Airways<.> ranks in ninth position among the world`s airlines in relation to service and productivity, according to the recognised specialist magazine `Flight International`.

The firm, in a statement, said that the ranking was acknowledgement of the Olympic Airways` subsidiary`s continual efforts over several years – which have brought about impressive results.

In 1997, the company earned profits of 14 million drachmas. The following year this figure jumped to 501 million drachmas and then in 1999, it soared to 1 billion drachmas. The airline expects the figure to reach 1.5 billion drachmas for 2000.

Macedonian Airways was established in 1992 as a subsidiary of OA, Greece`s national carrier, with the goal of operating charter flights.

It began fully operating in the summer of 1998 with two leased B727-230 aircraft. Today, the firm has four modern B737-400 planes.

Macedonian Airways is the exclusive international and domestic carrier for the Panathinaikos soccer team. It travels to numerous European and Middle East destinations.
