ATHENS, GREECE – Greek airport ground and maintenance crews intend to stage a 48-hour strike this week after a previous work stoppage was postponed, an employees union has announced. The strike on September 15 and 16 involving about 1,800 workers threatens to disrupt air traffic throughout the country.

The walkout had initially been planned for July but was cancelled `in a show of good will` due to destructive forest fires affecting many parts of Greece, the civil aviation workers` union said.

But workers` demands, which include payment for overtime work and guarantees that they will retain their posts when the airport moves to a new facility in Spata, eastern Athens, have still not been satisfied, the union said.

Unfortunately there was absolutely no response from authorities, the union said in a statement.
