Guide to alternative British summer

Ben Hatch, author of family travel guide Are We Nearly There Yet?, has collaborated with travel comparison site dealchecker.co.uk  on a visual guide to unconventional summer destinations in Britain. Many Brits are looking to avoid London and other major cities this summer, so Hatch and dealchecker.co.uk have chosen 10 events, destinations and activities that are affordable for families and offer a memorable change from the usual attractions.

"Staycations" have increased in popularity in recent years as families discover that a holiday in Britain can be more affordable and relaxing than going abroad, and the experts at dealchecker.co.uk can help holidaymakers find the best hotel offers and cheap car deals. Alternative destinations are not only a fun and quirky choice for UK breaks, but they are often cheaper as well.

Hatch spent five months driving to every town in Britain with his wife and two young children in preparation for his book , and used this experience to recommend several of his favourite destinations to dealchecker.co.uk.

The guide’s family-friendly suggestions range from dolphin spotting in the far north of Scotland to the World Alternative Games in Wales, where competitors will flex their muscle in events such as bog snorkelling and penny farthing races.

One of Hatch’s top selections for the guide is Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, not far from Newcastle. He comments: "Alnwick Castle…is the setting for the Quidditch game in the Harry Potter movies and also doubled for Hogwarts itself. There are Potter-themed tours, a fantastic knights’ quest and dressing up for kids."

Mark Attwell, MD of dealchecker.co.uk, comments: "It was great fun working with Ben to suggest affordable destinations for families and those looking for something a little different this summer. Visitors and locals alike can take advantage of offers on car hire and hotel rooms so that extraordinary UK holidays don’t have to be expensive."
