‘It’s time to fly’ says Glasgow Airport boss as Scots encouraged to book summer holidays now

A new marketing campaign has been launched by Glasgow Airport in a bid to encourage Scots to book their family holidays early as the summer season takes off. Amanda McMillan, MD of Glasgow Airport, is spearheading a new campaign to promote the benefits of flying from Scotland’s busiest international gateway, following a £31 million makeover.

The ‘Time to Fly’ campaign promotes the comfort and convenience of flying from Glasgow Airport, and highlights the growing number of destinations now available from BAA’s three Scottish airports. Almost 150 destinations are now served from the three airports, including nearly 90 from Glasgow alone.

This summer, more than a dozen new international services will take off from Glasgow, including new flights to Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Turkey and Greece.

The campaign is urging holidaymakers to book now to get the best savings. The worldwide downturn means there is less capacity in the airline market than last year – the number of seats on sale from Glasgow is down 9% on last year – so the best deals are those on sale now. A prize of £1,000 is being offered to encourage potential holidaymakers to book early this year, and adverts will be posted around the city and the airport to promote the campaign. To enter the competition, go to www.glasgowairport.com.

Amanda McMillan said: “After a long winter, most of us are now thinking about booking holidays, and getting good value for money is more important than ever. With 150 destinations available from Scotland, including almost 90 from Glasgow alone, canny Scots will be surprised how far their budget takes them. From Dublin to Dubai, Cardiff to Calgary and Plymouth to Philadelphia, there are destinations to suit everyone’s budget. Booking early often guarantees the best price. With fewer holidays on sale this year, anyone waiting until the summer to get a last minute bargain might be disappointed. The cheapest flights are on sale now".

Mrs McMillan also pointed to the ongoing investment at Glasgow Airport, designed to improve the passenger journey.

Last October, Glasgow Airport opened a new £31 million two storey terminal extension that includes a purpose built security search area, more space to relax, and new bars, shops and restaurants, including Starbucks, JD Wetherspoon and Amex. A new EAT food outlet, the first of its kind in the west of Scotland, also opened this week. Now, work is underway to complete the project by refurbishing large parts of the existing terminal building to create a new look departure lounge, open to all passengers. Around a dozen new retail units will feature in the new look lounge this summer.

Amanda McMillan added: “We have invested heavily to reduce security waiting times, create more space to relax, and provide a wider choice of bars, shops and restaurants. Passengers are already enjoying the fruits of that investment, not least this week with the opening of our new EAT restaurant. I’m pleased to say that there are even more improvements to come in the weeks ahead as we complete our transformation of the main departure lounge. We want everyone who uses Glasgow Airport to have a memorable experience this summer.”
