Commenting on a measure included in a bill on deregulation and modernization of the passenger shipping market, the Union of Passenger Ship Owners (EEA<.>) said recently that it opposed the government`s invitation to lower the maximum age of ships to 30 years of age from the previous 35 years.

According to EEA, lessening the age limit would leave distant islands without transport, as more mature vessels were used on these non-profitable routes. In the act of this, EEA added in a statement, the new course of action by the government would seriously impair the size of the Greek merchant fleet. Further its argument, EEA noted that out of a total of some 124 ships, 77 would have to retire by 2006 under the new measure opposite to a figure of 22 if the already existing age limit was retained
