As of next summer, Lufthansa passengers will have an even better choice of connections to West Africa. From 7 April 2005, subject to the granting of traffic rights, Lufthansa will offer three flights a week from Frankfurt to Port Harcourt in Nigeria. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, an Airbus A330-300 with 221 seats will take off for Port Harcourt, and from there continue to the Nigerian capital, Abuja. Lufthansa launched flights to Abuja in October 2002, and currently serves the city also three times a week.
Lufthansa passengers will also benefit from more frequent connections to and from Accra in Ghana. Starting on 7 April 2005, Lufthansa will also offer daily flights to Lagos (Nigeria), continuing on to Accra (Ghana). At present Lufthansa flies four times a week to Accra and daily to Lagos.
With the introduction of flights to Port Harcourt and more frequent services to Accra, Lufthansa is strengthening its competitive position in key petroleum and gas markets in West Africa. Nigeria is Africa’s top petroleum producer, and numerous oilfields are located close to Port Harcourt Airport. Arrival and departure times of Lufthansa flights at Port Harcourt have been exactly tailored to the requirements of the local oil industry and also timed to allow onward flights by helicopter to the oil platforms. Flights have also been optimally coordinated with the dense route network operated by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. This will guarantee short connecting times, for example, for flights to North America via Frankfurt.
