Olympic Airways subsidiary revamps fleet

With two new Boeing 717-200 short-range passenger jets, the regional arm of state-run Olympic<.> Airways begins its fleet renewal program. The company, basically unaffected by the major problems being experienced by the mother company, will be one of the first carriers in the world to use these new technically-advanced jets.
Delivery of the first jet is expected in December. Each of the 105-seat planes will be leased for a five year period from Bavaria International Aircraft Leasing for $238,000 a month plus $280 per flight hour.
The regional carrier hopes the new planes will help it hold on to its present 70% market share of about 1.5 million passengers now that a barrage of new Greek carriers have entered the market place. As well, it plans to extend its network to include points within the Black Sea and Balkan area, and selected European destinations.
Due to the low operating cost and superior comfort, Boeing 717 will be the driver in this market and Olympic Aviation and the Greek traveling public will reap the benefits of that value.
The 717 is well suited to exploit the deregulated European market and the European business traveler`s demand for more point to point regional service. The 717 is especially will suited to the needs of the Greek market which are driven, in many respects by the unique geography of Greece.
Olympic Aviation did a very rigorous and thorough evaluation to arrive at this decision. They studied the economics, the performance, the product support, and the price. Boeing`s relationship with Olympic goes way back to the first 707 ordered by Mr. Onassis and we intend to remain strong business partners with Olympic, Olympic Aviation, and Greece for many years to come, stated Mr. Steve Aliment, Director Sales Europe of Boeing.
The range capacity from Athens of Boeing 717 is Madrid, London, Stockholm, Helsinki, Moscow, Tehran, Jeddah, and Khartoum.
