‘Routes’ success demonstrates return of confidence

This years’ Routes<.>, the eighth World Route Development Forum, hosted by Athens International Airport on September 22-24 in Athens, Greece, attracted an impressive 800 delegates, representing over 300 airports and 150 airlines worldwide.

A key reason for the record turnout is that 9/11 speeded up the industry downturn already underway. Airlines made drastic changes in months rather than years and the industry recession was accelerated. Many airlines are now planning for the upturn and this year’s Routes came at just the right time. Furthermore, airports have become increasingly pro-active in terms of route development, providing tremendous knowledge and resources to the carriers. Route development is now a real partnership between airlines and airports and more than ever, Routes is the annual catalyst for further route development.

Set in the stunning Astir Palace Resort by the Mediterranean, this year’s Routes delivered an unforgettable event. Delegate feedback was extremely positive.

Mike Berman, Chief Operating Officer said: The quality of the meetings on offer definitely set Routes apart from any other networking event. It is the place to be for airports who wish to discuss route development with their airline counterparts.

This year, airline groupings were also introduced: Star Alliance, Skyteam and oneworld were allocated dedicated meeting zones which proved extremely popular alongside the cargo zone.

Next year’s Routes event will be held in Scotland at the Edinburgh International Convention Centre on September 7-9th 2003 and will be hosted by Scottish Enterprise.

The organisers are planning for an attendance of 1000 delegates, including 200 carriers.
