Having obtained its full cargo handling licence for Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at the end of March, Swissport has now secured its first full freighter customer for its new services: the operation is to assume full responsibility from June 1 onwards for handling Asiana’s two weekly dedicated Boeing 747-400 freighters, which the carrier operates on a Seoul-Vienna-London-Amsterdam-Seoul routing. Amsterdam is Europe’s third-biggest air cargo hub. Some 1.4 million tonnes of airfreight passed through the airport last year; and that figure is expected to increase by over five per cent in 2005.

“Asiana Airlines attaches great importance to quality and reliability,” says Mr. J.S. Kim, the carrier’s Regional Manager, “because we want to offer our customers the best possible service product. We have chosen Swissport as our cargo handling partner because they share the same values and because they have shown, with their new Amsterdam operation, that they take our concerns seriously and are keen to provide us with a top handling service.”

Asiana Airlines is one of the two major airlines in South Korea and has been founded in February, 1988. Asiana Airlines operates a modern fleet of Airbus A320’s, Airbus A321`s, Airbus A330`s, Boeing B737`s, Boeing B767(F)`s, Boeing B777`s, and Boeing B747(F)`s to destinations worldwide. From Europe Asiana Airlines currently operates flights ex London (STN/LHR, 8 x p/w), Frankfurt (FRA, 7 x p/w), Brussels (BRU, 5 x p/w), Vienna (VIE, 2 x p/w) and Amsterdam (AMS, 2 x p/w).

“We’re delighted to welcome Asiana Airlines aboard as our first cargo customer,” says Jan van Anrooy, General Manager of Swissport Cargo Services in Amsterdam. “We have enjoyed excellent cooperation from Schiphol Airport and the various other authorities while setting up our new operation, and we are now reaping the rewards of those endeavours. We’re greatly looking forward to working with Asiana; and we’re confident of announcing further customers for our new cargo handling services in the next few weeks.”
